"Skinnybones and the Wrinkle Queen"
By: Glen Huser
Realistic Fiction
Grades 6/7
232 pages
More than anything in the world, 15-year-old Tamara wants to be a model. Her mother might have left her to the foster care system, but at least she gave her good bone structure. There is a summer course that Tamara wants - needs - to take to help her follow her dream, but it costs over $2000 and there is no way that her foster parents will let her travel out to the west coast to take it.
Enter The Wrinkle Queen, aka Miss Barclay, a 90-year-old former teacher living at the Sierra Sunset Senior's Lodge. Miss Barclay is recovering from knee surgery and has every intention of returning to her home as soon as possible; however, it might not be possible, due to other health issues and the fact that her nephew is eager to sell her house and car out from under her. One of the things that Miss Barclay loves more than anything is music, especially opera. She wishes she could go, one last time, to Seattle for the performance of Wagner's Ring Cycle. But how can she when she is stuck here and no longer able to drive?
Tamara and Miss Barclay are paired up during a school visit to the seniors lodge. Tamara shares her dream of becoming a model and a plan begins to take shape...Join this unlikely duo as they attempt to pull off the ultimate sneaking-out-of-the-house scenario and set forth on the road trip of a lifetime!
