Titanic Book One: Unsinkable ~ Gordon Korman
Surrey School Book of the Year Nominee 2012-13
Recommended for: Grades 5-7
The first book in Korman's trilogy, "Unsinkable" brings the past of the legendary ship to life. You are transported back to the beginning of the 20th century and given a glimpse into the lives of some of the passengers on the maiden (and last) voyage of Titanic. We learn of Paddy, a young Irish street kid, now stowaway, who picked the wrong pocket and is running from the most evil mobster in Belfast. There is the pampered socialite, Julianna, who begins to think that riches are not the route to happiness, and Sophie Bronson, who admires her mother for her activism as a suffragette, but wishes she wouldn't get arrested quite so often....And then there is Alfie, driven by circumstance to become a steward on the ship and desperate that no one finds out his secret. As the Titanic sets out to sea, the stories of these characters begin to overlap as they embark on what will be a trip with a tragic ending. Will they survive?
